Loop from Hawes east up to Cubeck then along and up the Bridleway past Carpley Green across to the Stake road and down to Semerwater. Then back over the top to Hawes.
Distance: Approx 18 miles
Time: Approx 3 hours
2 Long hard climbs (one very steep but on road) and 2 great descents.
10 minute video of most of the ride from Cubeck to Burtersett.
From Hawes take the A684 towards Aygarth, after 5 miles in Worton take the road to Thornton Rust, pretty steep climb, at the top take the Bridleway at the Farm (at the start of the Video). Then follow the Bridleway up the track and out across the grassy top until it meets up with the road to Carpley Green. At the farm carry on up the Bridleway, some steep loose rock sections and other sections of grassy track. Carry on the track, don`t take the signposted way to Thoralby, just carry on past until you desend gradually and meet the Stake Road.
Once at the Stake Road turn right to begin the fantastic desent down to Semerwater approximately 4 mile, see video, although the wind today was so stong there was some downhill pedalling involved!, the last bit is on on a steep narrow road, so watch out for cars. Once at the lake, take a breath as the climb out of the valley is initially short and very steep, so get into bottom cog for a short while, before taking the road over to Hawes, about another 4 miles. Stay in a low gear as the road just keeps climbing with a steep tight bend 3/4 of the way up. Then once at the top enjoy the views and the road descent back to Hawes though the Village of Burtersett.
