From Hawes take the road to Burtersett and then ride up through Burtersett to the Roman Road, take the branch up to the right and follow the Bridleway (Old Roman Road) for about 4 miles until you meet the main road to Wharfedale. Follow the road over the top and then down the long steep, and in places single track road through Oughtershaw and along the riverside to Buckden, this is a great place to stop and cool off on a hot day.
Then when you get to Buckden, head into the Car Park and take the Bridleway that climbs up the hill alongside the road. This is quite a steep climb in places. Once at the top follow the grassy lane toward the top of the dale. Once through the second gate carry on the track towards Cray High Bridge. This comes out on the main road, just below a very steep hill and sharp bend.
Follow the road for about a quarter of a mile and turn left up the Bridleway, get ready for another steep rocky climb of just over a mile. Then its onto the top for a flat ride throught the Grouse Moor and get ready for the long sweeping descent towards Semerwater, makes it well worth the effort of the climb.
Ride down past Semerwater and then take the very steep road up to to the top taking the fork in the road at the top to Hawes/Burtersett. Another! long steep climb to the top to be rewarded with another long downhill back to Hawes.
